Pro-NRA politicians tweet ‘Prayers for Orlando’ because they are hypocritical human garbage
“Prayers for Orlando.” It’s a sentiment that’s widely circulated since the horrific shooting this weekend that claimed 50 lives and injured 53 others. There is nothing wrong with prayer, and certainly most people expressing this sentiment genuinely mean it. There is something wrong with politicians who have the power to actually do something to prevent these horrible massacres simply tweeting after the carnage.
There is also something truly disgusting about politicians who’ve made careers out of treating members of the LGBT community like they’re less than human, tweeting condolences to their families.
Igor Volsky of the Center for American Progress Action Fund in Washington, DC has been collecting tweets from pro-NRA and anti-LGBT politicians since the Orlando tragedy. It’s truly eye-opening to see how comfortable they all are in their hypocrisy.
No Republican lawmakers who have tweeted about #OrlandoShooting have mentioned #LGBT community or that it was a target of the attack

We must make America safe again. #Orlando
— Jeff Fortenberry (@JeffFortenberry) June 12, 2016
.@JeffFortenberry got $10,950 from @NRA, so making “America safe again” probably means giving people free AK-15s https://t.co/qq2dTDYywa

This is a time for Americans of all walks of life to lean on one another, to pray together, to lift each other up as we grieve with Orlando
— CathyMcMorrisRodgers (@cathymcmorris) June 12, 2016
.@cathymcmorris got $14,950 from @NRA do we won’t be able to lean on her to restrict access to assault weapons https://t.co/zNWNH5syls

The man who spent his presidential campaign degrading LGBTs wants you to know you’re in his #ThoughtsAndPrayers https://t.co/6FLrRWldGz

It truly goes on and on and on. Volsky lists politician after politician who has repeatedly taken money from the NRA and voted against gun safety measures, stepping up to offer empty condolences. Meanwhile, the NRA didn’t acknowledge the shooting at all. There is no mention of it on their social media channels.
Six months ago, GOP lawmakers rejected a bill that would have stopped shooter Omar Mateen from purchasing the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle he used to massacre 50 Americans legally. One day after the San Bernardino shootings, Senate Republicans rejected a bill that aimed to stop suspected terrorists from legally buying guns. 54 senators voted against a measure that would have denied people on the terrorist watch list the ability to buy guns.
“If you need proof that Congress is a hostage to the gun lobby, look no further than today’s vote blocking a bill to prevent known or suspected terrorists from buying guns and explosives,” Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who sponsored the legislation, told MSNBC. “Congress has been paralyzed by the gun lobby for years, while more and more Americans are killed in mass shootings. The carnage won’t stop until Congress finds the courage to stand up to the gun lobby and protect the nation.”
We don’t need your prayers, Congress. We need you to kindly climb out of the NRA’s deep pockets. We need gun safety laws. We need people who have been on terrorist watch lists to not have the ability to walk into a gun store/show and purchase semi-automatic weapons legally. And while we’re on the subject, why does any private citizen need to own a weapon that has the capability of shooting 750 bullets in a minute?
