I always love it when I find an app that truly works as I imagine it should and makes something in my daily life a little easier. I’m Anna, a long-time contributor here at 5 Minutes for Mom, and I’m excited to introduce you to a new free app called Homey that will help you teach your kids about money through chores. This post is sponsored, (many thanks to Homey) and extra thanks to you for reading and sharing!
Having a Type A personality means I adore spending time planning things, making lists and charts, and creating printables for my family to use and to help them remember their responsibilities around the house. Sometimes these charts and lists work great, sometimes they don’t. And the worst thing is when someone forgets to mark their chore or responsibility off and the routine gets out of whack.
Printables can be great, but at the same time, with technology in our pockets, having an app that is with us all the time makes taking care of so many things so much easier!
Homey asked me if I’d like to try out their chore app. I was excited to try it out because it’s so much more than a chore chart with check boxes. Homey helps you teach your kids responsibility and the value of work and financial skills and also rewards them for setting and achieving goals.
One of the biggest struggles I have as a parent is getting my kids to actually do their chores. I don’t like to nag them, but I do expect chores to be done by a certain time each day. I don’t like everyone running around right before bed trying to get their chores done, that makes for a stressful evening. With Homey, you get notifications when your chores are due and this eliminates me having to remind them 12,847 times during the day.
There are several “packs” of chores that are categorized and make it easy to get set up and going. Download a pack, select which chores you want for each household member…
Then you can “fine tune” each chore to recur, be due at a specific time and day, and even rotate among members of your household.
You can set chores to require a photo as proof they’ve completed the chore. I like this for some chores to make sure my kids have completed a chore to my standards and to prevent them from taking the easy way out.1
Chores are worth coins or points. Coins are for chores that are paid, points are for chores that are not paid. I especially love this feature because I expect my kids to do certain things around the house that are simply their responsibility, a help around the house because we are family and work together to maintain the home.
A new feature that Homey has just recently released is the ability to transfer allowance to their kid’s accounts. You can link your child’s bank accounts allowing you to deposit rewards directly. How convenient?! Homey is so much more than just a chores app.
Along with this is the goals feature. I love this because it enables you to teach your kids about financial responsibility and rewards. Kids (and parents) can see how much more is needed to reach a certain goal and get a certain reward. The parent gets to choose what the rewards are, suggestions being an allowance, a certain toy, screen time, or anything the parent can think of. Setting different rewards helps to teach children delayed gratification, they might want to redeem their rewards for a $1 toy, but the feeling of accomplishment by waiting for the higher value reward is the best and leads to better financial responsibility.
